Creative Wellbeing Session for Afghan & Syrian Women and Children
A New Year–themed workshop to connect, create, and share culture
Join us for a warm, supportive, and creative wellbeing session designed especially for Afghan and Syrian women, with an open and welcoming invitation to women from other communities who would like to explore traditions, create together, and connect through shared culture and experience.
This short, New Year–themed workshop is part of Centrala’s Community Wellbeing Programme and offers a gentle, friendly space to slow down, meet others, and take time for yourself. Through creative activities, storytelling, and simple wellbeing practices, we will reflect on themes of renewal, hope, belonging, and new beginnings, drawing inspiration from Afghan, Syrian, and UK traditions.
The session recognises both the strength and resilience of women who have experienced migration and change, and the everyday challenges of settling into life in the UK. It provides an opportunity to relax, express yourself creatively, and feel supported within a safe and respectful group environment.
Together, we will explore:
-
Family Blessing Cards, inspired by Syrian New Year traditions of kindness, warmth, and sharing good wishes with loved ones
-
A “Tree of Renewal” art activity, reflecting Afghan customs of planting trees at the start of a new year as a symbol of growth, hope, and fresh beginnings
-
A Storytelling Circle, where women can share New Year traditions from Afghanistan and Syria, and explore how these can blend with English customs to create a sense of home and belonging
-
Gentle mindfulness and wellbeing exercises, using colour, breath, gratitude, and reflection to notice positive moments, acknowledge challenges, and recognise personal and family strengths
All materials, hot drinks, and snacks will be provided. No previous creative experience is needed — the session is open to all abilities and is shaped by the women who attend. Your stories, traditions, ideas, and voices are at the heart of what we create together.
The workshop is facilitated by Monika Lenard, who has over 20 years of experience working with migrant women and families. Monika specialises in creating safe, creative, and culturally sensitive spaces that support wellbeing, confidence, and community connection.
